The Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
Activities
In 2009
Review of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Pans: Until CBD COP 10 (Nagoya, Japan Oct 2010), UNU-IAS is undertaking an assessment of the implementation CBD National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). This project will assess the extent to which NBSAPs seek to integrate biodiversity concerns into sustainable development and poverty reduction strategies and national processes and how they address the Millennium Development Goals.
Key lessons from national experiences in NBSAP development and implementation will be identified and analysed with an attempt to identify the obstacles that have hindered countries for making implementation progress.
This review will also include a capacity assessment. The capacity needs for NBSAP development and implementation will be assessed and the training tools developed over the past 10 years will be reviewed for their effectiveness and scope. The Institute is participating in regional and sub-regional meetings on CBD implementation where indepth interviews with participants are being done.
The final outcome of this project is a report on the assessment of the extent to which Objectives 3.1, 3.3. and 3.4 of the Strategic Plan for the Convention on Biological Diversity have been achieved and recommendations for priority actions for supporting national CBD implementation post 2010.
This project is funded by the the governments of Norway and Sweden.
