G8 Dialogue with Professor Kiyoshi Kurokawa
Global Health: What is necessary to make it possible? Wednesday, 16 of April 2008, 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Eight years after the indicator year for “Health for All” set by the World Health Organisation (WHO), this goal still appears illusory and challenging to achieve at best. A resurgence of infectious diseases assisted by warming temperatures, lifestyle changes, and insufficient nutrition and access to health care facilities especially among populations in developing and least developed economies are major causes for concern for all humanity. In a globalized world, where borders are crossed with increasing frequency, these problems can no longer be restricted to the territorial limits of nation states. Prof. Kurokawa argues that in order to achieve global health, it is important for developed economies and their scientists, who have the necessary capacity and technology, to engage proactively in constructive health interventions. He also argues that to be effective, such activities must be co-ordinated with both grass-root communities and the governments of developing countries. Professor Kiyoshi Kurokawa is Science Advisor to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet and Professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). He was the President of the Science Council of Japan and a member of the Committee for the Science and Technology Policy of the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan from 2002 to 2006. He is trained in Medicine and served as a Professor at the Schools of Medicine of UCLA from 1979 to 1984, of the University of Tokyo from 1989 to 2006, and as Dean and Professor at the University of Tokai from 1996 to 2002. He is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of US National Academies, Association of American Physicians, Master of American College of Physicians, and many other leading professional societies. He is the Founding Chairman of Japan Healthcare Policy Institute, an independent think-tank promoting healthcare reform, which recently organized a 'Global Health Summit; toward TICAD, G8 and beyond' with the World Bank and the Gates Foundation. Professor Kurokawa has taken on numerous leadership and advocacy roles in Japan, he has authored several books, book chapters and scientific papers and is a frequent speaker at many national and international fora on issues related to science and policy.
