Critical Intersection: Climate Change and Security

Purpose: To introduce and examine the impact of climate change on security, including food security, in sub-Saharan Africa, and particularly to identify opportunities for critical interventions to facilitate peace and development.

Education for Sustainable Development: Focus on Regional Centres of Expertise in Africa

Purpose: As Global Service Centre of the initiative to establish Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development around the world, the UNU-IAS is been particularly active in Africa. This side-event introduces the work of the RCE network. A documentary on environmental and sustainable development challenges in the Greater Nairobi region will be presented.

High-Level Panel: Science and Technology for Africa's Sustainable Development

Purpose: To give key practitioners, policy-makers and commentators in the field of science and technology the opportunity to highlight areas where Japanese and international expertise can be of direct relevance to African efforts to put in place policies and programmes to support sustainable development.
Speakers include: Eckhard Deutscher (Chair, OECD Development Assistance Committee), Calestous Juma (Co-Chair of the African Union's High-Level Panel on Modern Biotechnology), AH Zakri (Director, UNU-IAS), and others.
