Ever since the publication of "Life Between Buildings" in 1971, Jan Gehl's observation and study of human beings and their interaction with the built environment has influenced architects and planners all over the world. His forty-­­­year study of central Copenhagen has helped give the city international recognition for its livability, and prompted the application of his theories to other projects. This lecture will discuss Jan Gehl's approach in Copenhagen, New York City and other projects, including the rebuilding efforts after the earthquake in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand.

David Sim is a Scottish architect and Director at Gehl Architects. He has taught at architecture and design schools in many countries. While working at Lund University, Sweden, he has developed teaching methods that have led to a number of pedagogical awards and distinctions. David continues his work as an educator at Gehl Architects both with professionals and the public, giving lectures and guest critiques, as well as facilitating workshops and other planning events. His main area of work at Gehl Architects is master-planning and urban design, collaborating with other professionals. Recent work includes the design of a new town in the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland, recently selected by the Scottish Government to represent their Sustainable Communities Initiative. At present, he is working in Christchurch, as a member of the project steering team and the operations team, making strategic and operational decisions about the plan for rebuilding the city after the Earthquake.
