Objectives:
On 11 March 2011, countless lives and livelihoods in the north-east part of Japan, including those in satoyama and satoumi, were lost or severely destroyed by the earthquakes and tsunami. Despite indescribable experiences they went through, people stood up again and are making desperate efforts to restart their lives.
This symposium aims to explore ways to rebuild the devastated satoyama/satoumi communities through integrative approaches with specific focus on the linkages between land and sea, while considering deep-rooted challenges those communities have been facing such as aging population and lack of successors, in order to contribute to the restoration as well as the revitalization of satoyama and satoumi in the long run.
The outcomes of this symposium will be presented at various meetings and occasions, including CBD SBSTTA-15 in November 2011.
