Event Description
The Earth System Governance Project is the largest social science research network in the area of governance and global environmental change. Its international research programme takes up the challenge of exploring political solutions and novel, more effective governance systems to cope with the current transitions in the biogeochemical systems of the planet. The presentation will first introduce the concept of earth system governance and its five analytical problems: the problem of the overall architecture of earth system governance, of agency beyond the state and of the state, of the adaptiveness of governance mechanisms and processes and of their accountability and legitimacy, and of modes of allocation and access in earth system governance. Second, the Earth System Governance Project will be presented, including its organization and activities, as well as research findings, and achievements and challenges in the science-policy interface.

Speaker's Biography
Ruben Zondervan is the Executive Director of the Earth System Governance Project. He is based at the International Project Office hosted by Lund University, Sweden.
Ruben Zondervan studied political science, modern history, law, and economics in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) and political sciences in Potsdam (Germany), and holds a degree in environment & resource management from the VU University Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Prior to his current position, he worked at the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), the University Oldenburg, the VU University Amsterdam, the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Riga, and at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and also gained work experience as planner and consultant in industry.
Ruben Zondervan holds numerous professional positions. Amongst others, he currently is academic co-director of Governance of Global Environmental Change, an Open Society Foundations Program (2011-2014); External Expert to the EU TEMPUS Project Environmental Governance for Environmental Curricula (2011-2014 ); Member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Environmental Governance Architecture Research Group; and research fellow with the Global Governance Project (2006 - ).
