Seminar Description
Seminar language: English
As its two main themes set by the UN, the Rio+20 Conference—to be held in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—will address the green economy and governance for sustainable development. Even though recent discussions on sustainable development have benefited from the accumulation of empirical and theoretical knowledge in the last decades, they have not produced the conceptual novelty and tools necessary to put green economy and governance for sustainable development on the mainstream political, social and economic agenda. This seminar offers an opportunity for discussion and engagement with UNU experts and partners in academia, government and the private sector, to raise awareness about the forthcoming Rio+20 Conference, and to understand the achievements and obstacles towards sustainability met in the last 20 years in order to propose new ideas and changes for the future. The event will also introduce on-going debates within UNU on the Rio+20 topics that compose the book Green Economy and Good Governance for Sustainable Development: Opportunities, Promises and Concerns. Discussions will draw on input from the global network of UNU institutes that have contributed to the Rio+20 debates, with perspectives from their respective areas of expertise, such as health, economic development and energy. A book launch and reception for the above publication will follow the seminar.
