International Public Forum on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: The Tropical Australian Experience
International Public Forum on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: The Tropical Australian Experience Thursday, 3 April 2008 2.30 – 6.00 pm Followed by a social function from 6.00 – 7.00 pm Mal Nairn Auditorium, Charles Darwin University Darwin, Australia Background: The International Public Forum on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change is a collaborative effort between Charles Darwin University (CDU), the United Nations University - Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA). The outcomes of the Public Forum are intended to contribute to the International Expert Group Meeting on Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change which will be held from 2 to 4 April 2008 in Darwin, Australia. Members of the Expert Group will also be attending the public forum. The main objectives of the Expert Meeting are to consider: • The effects of climate change on indigenous peoples; • Adaptation measures to climate change; • Carbon projects and carbon trading; and • Factors that enable or obstruct indigenous peoples’ participation in the climate change processes. This contributory Public Forum will open with an overview of the deliberations to date of the Expert Meeting. A number of key speakers have been invited to share case studies on practical experiences, particularly focusing on the impacts of climate change on indigenous peoples and adaptation, mitigation and opportunities for carbon projects. This will be followed by a panel discussion and then a short social event, to provide participants with a more informal setting to network and share their knowledge and experiences. Participation: Online registration for the forum is now closed. The Forum seeks to draw on the expertise of indigenous peoples, intergovernmental agencies, national and local governments, indigenous peoples' organizations, non-government organizations, academics and relevant United Nations agencies that are active within the field of climate change.
